Who is Prompto?
Prompto Argentum (Latin for "Quick Silver") is one of four party members from Final Fantasy XV. He accompanies Prince Noctis on his road trip to marry his fiancé, but in typical Final Fantasy fashion, things happen, and what was supposed to be joyous unification of kingdoms turns into a journey to save the world.
Prompto is a ranged fighter and utilizes different firearms and machinery in combat. His starting weapon is a gun appropriately named "Handgun."
Stats-wise, Prompto is the weakest party member, but what he makes up for in poor physical attack is the ability to inflict status ailments. He can also be commanded to take photos during combat, which is very funny.

I bought FFXV sometime in mid August of 2020. Because it was the pandemic, I had a lot of time on my hands. Unfortunately, that also gave my brain the free time it needed to start getting depressed and anxious again. The world was in a very scary state and it exacerbated my anxiety. Internally I was dealing with a lot of uncertain feelings, some of which dealt with identity and my place in the world, others about my home life. This was one of the worst depressive episodes I’d ever been in, and hopefully the last time it ever gets that bad again. I’m doing way better these days!
Anyway, back to Final Fantasy. The game was an escape. Or maybe "escape" is the wrong word. It gave me a break from the shit I was dealing with. FFXV was very relaxing to me; most of the game is just four guys on a roadtrip. You do a lot of driving and walking, sometimes fishing. The quiet atmosphere combined with the presence of genuinely fun written characters gave me space to think and actually tackle some of my worst thoughts head-on instead of running away like I usually do. Being alone with those thoughts was scary, but it wasn't so horrifying when you had a gaggle of guys on your screen.
I found Prompto to be a standout character. He has traits that I can relate to, such as deep-rooted feelings of inadequacy, and self-worth and identity issues stemming from othering. He embodies the role of a comic relief character using humor to hide their true feelings, but I feel he takes that trope and twists it. He’s a very grounded, multidimensional character, and in my opinion, is the most realistically written one of the group.
As for why I like him so much, I think when you love a character and they have traits and issues that mirror your own, you get tricked into loving yourself. Suddenly, those issues are just ever so slightly more easy to accept and tackle.
Prompto's friends don't hate him for his "flaws,” they love him and they always will. If you have friends that truly love you, they will be there for you and guide you, they'll laugh and cry with you. I see that and I understand that it's possible for me too. Life doesn't have to be lonely or full of self-loathing.
